Better Skin in 5: Day 2 You Are What You Eat

Your skin likes it when you eat healthy things. It's logical, it makes sense, so why don't we always do it?

Maybe you're someone who loves to eat healthily all the time. But, I'll be the first one to admit, I love eating greasy, sugary, fried foods- there's a time and place to let loose and enjoy those things -moderation, am I right?

When I don't eat well my skin lets me know.

Now, some can eat whatever they want and not have any type of skincare issue their entire life, but that's called blessed genetics. Those are the same folks you hear about who drank and smoked their entire life and lived to see 100. I am guessing their skin might look like a wrinkled prune by that point, but you get what I mean.

1) If it’s a day you’re going to permit yourself to eat whatever, actually permit yourself to eat whatever. And don’t beat yourself up when your skin is cranky the next morning.

When I've had a night of red wine, and heavy food I wake up to swollen under-eye bags, and dehydrated skin. And if there is chocolate involved, well who knows where the zit will wind up, but it will appear, like a good friend, saying "I told you so".

It makes sense, yet I do it anyway. But, I am human, and I really love chocolate.

So, in an attempt to be better with my eating, I do so without judgment or shame. If I want to indulge, I enjoy it, and I accept that my skin might be cranky the next morning.

2) If today is a day you can focus on what you eat, make sure you eat well

I choose to eat foods that support my skin and body on a regular. My daily meals consist of eating protein, a grain, and a vegetable. And if I want a snack, I usually reach for a piece of fruit, or nuts.

Your skin needs the right amount of amino acids, omega-3, antioxidants, essential fats, and vitamins. And, you guessed it, WATER.

3) No matter what kind of day it is, here’s my hack for getting enough water

My go-to formula to figure out how many ounces of water I need is to take my weight and divide it in half. Getting a larger water bottle can help you with your water intake, but you have to remember to use it, and take it with you where ever you go ;)

And, remember you need to eat enough throughout your day. Not getting enough calories can wreak havoc on your metabolism, and if you are perimenopausal your hormones are already messing with your metabolism, so you need to EAT. If you aren't getting enough calories, and crash dieting you will suffer from a slower metabolism, both day and night, and your skin won't be happy.

At this point, you may be thinking that you have it all nailed down, but you still feel unhappy with the way your skin looks.

Eating well and drinking enough water are parts of the healthy skin puzzle.

We have to look at the entire puzzle, not just the pieces. Sometimes we need an extra pair of eyes to spot the missing piece.
