Not So Pretty

The other night I watched the documentary called Not So Pretty and it reminded me why I created Just Skincare products. It also reminded me why I am so passionate about being your own advocate when it comes to what you put in and on your body.

The beauty industry is scary, and we need to pay attention to what's in our products and start educating ourselves on the companies we buy products from.

It is an unregulated industry and because of that people are experiencing things that they should never experience. It is heartbreaking to hear about women getting cancer from the makeup they put on their faces, or their hair falling out from hair products they use every day.

These things should never happen, but they do and have been happening for years. You would think an industry worth 60 billion dollars would have to be regulated but it isn't. So, that means if you buy a product from a certain company and have an adverse reaction, like your hair falling out, the FDA can only make a recommendation that they recall the product, but they do not have the authority to do anything else.

The FDA doesn't have the authority to prohibit companies from using certain ingredients.

And, to make matters worse there are only 11 ingredient offenders compared to the EU's 1,300 that have been banned here in the US. Our laws are outdated, and they need to be changed.

The good news is that you get to decide what products you buy and from where.

I developed Just Skincare products after I had an adverse reaction to a chemical peel, and the products that were put on my skin after the peel. Everything I put on my face after that burned, turned my face red, and dried it out. I was desperate for relief, so I started researching what was in all the products I was using, and what I found wasn't pretty.

So, I developed a line of products with ingredients designed to support the skin. I used the information given to me by Formula Botanica, the EU school where I received my Organic Skincare Formulators certification to find reputable companies I could source ingredients from.

If you have the time I highly recommend watching the Not So Pretty documentary. It's insightful, honest, and horrifying.

The documentary lists resources that you can use to make informed decisions on the products you use daily, like EWG's Skin Deep website.

Or, let me do it for you! I offer custom skin care consultations where we go over what products you are using, making sure there aren't any ingredient offenders-based off on the EU list, assess what your goals are, and find a routine suited to those goals.
